Communities with populations less than 50,000 are now eligible to receive federal pandemic relief funds allocated through the American Rescue Plan.
These funds are critical for helping more than 1,250 small communities across Illinois recover pandemic-related costs and set up for long-term health and stability.
ARP dollars must be spent on projects that meet guidelines as outlined by the Treasury Department, such as broadband and wastewater improvement, premium pay for essential workers, public health programs, and lost revenue.
Funds are allocated by population, and amounts can be viewed online.
To apply for these resources, municipalities must apply through the State of Illinois’ NEU Portal no later than September 30, 2021. After requests are submitted, governments will receive aid money in two payments; the first is within 30 days and the second within a year.
Communities that do not claim funds allocated will simply lose out on these key resources. Be sure to submit your application by the deadline.

Many communities are struggling to take full advantage of federal recovery dollars. The Community Resilience Initiative can help local leaders manage grant opportunities end-to-end, making sure allowable projects make the most of relief funds.
